What is Healthy Eating?

A heart-healthy diet is important in preventing and managing heart disease. A “diet” means “a way of eating”.

A heart-healthy diet means:

Knowing how to read a food label on the packaged foods you buy will help you identify what is in the foods you are eating. You will be able to find out how much fat, fibre, sodium and sugar you are eating. Learn how to read food labels »

To get a better idea of what your diet looks like you may find it helpful to fill out a 3-day food diary. Write down everything you eat and drink for 2 days during the week and 1 day on the weekend. This will give you an overall idea of your current “way of eating”. Download a food diary template (PDF, opens in new window) »

It can be overwhelming to think about the number of changes you need to make to your diet in order to eat more healthily. Start with one small change and build on your success. An action plan will help you get there. Learn how to build an action plan »
